Rooted Edge Consulting offers services to support managers at nonprofits because we believe in the power of managers to strengthen mission-driven work. We also know that managing staff is challenging, in part because we are not always given a playbook. Through our coaching work, training sessions, and management projects with nonprofits, we bring our years of experience managing staff, building organizations, working with leaders at dozens of nonprofits, and training and commitment around diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices to every project.

Whether you are utilizing our coaching services or attending one of our training sessions, our emphasis and approach to management focuses on these themes:

  • A belief in the crucial role managers play in advancing an organization’s mission and that refining/ strengthening manager’s skills/ approach will have an impact on advancing the organization's programs and goals.

  • Emphasis on listening, creating a positive setting where staff feel supported, while building a culture of feedback

  • Ensuring an equitable and inclusive setting in all areas of management

  • Goal-oriented setting, ambitious but realistic. Emphasis on planning and prioritizing.

  • The importance of managers using core tools and refining and strengthening those -- tools include weekly individual check-ins, group meetings, aligning on goals, and working with their staff to develop plans and prioritize.

Our Founder, Sarah Bennett is lead on most of our coaching and training services, with input, advice, and close partnership with Rooted Edge’s Senior Recruiter and Training Specialist, Lindsay Crowder, who played a lead role in training content development. You can read more about Sarah and Lindsay’s backgrounds and expertise here.

“My favorite thing about last week's training was going over how to set up your staff for success by asking them questions like, 'this week would be successful if...' I tried it on my last check in, and it really helped them figure out what to prioritize.

Management Coaching & Support:

Through our management coaching service, we partner with your organization to help coach and train one or more of your managers. We can work one-on-one with your new or seasoned manager to help strengthen their management skills, orientation, and approach.

We’ll design the coaching plan which works best for you, but most of our projects include: direct training on core management skills and tools; observation and intake; providing tools and templates to help with efficiency; and ongoing coaching/ listening sessions, ongoing observation and feedback; problem-solving around your biggest pain points.

"As a management coach, Sarah took a lot of time and care to understand my challenges and needs as a manager and was genuinely interested in helping me succeed. Her feedback was insightful and her approach to helping with challenges I was facing was solution-oriented, with clear steps for moving forward. Rooted Edge is a valued member of our team and has been an integral part of our organization's growth and development over the years-- we would recommend working with Sarah and her team again and again!"
